Today in crypto, Coinbase filed with the CFTC to bring single-stock perpetual futures to US traders, Binance brushed off a report that ECB President Christine Lagarde intervened in its failed Greek crypto license bid, and the US Treasury sanctioned Iranian crypto exchange BitBank over alleged Bitcoin transfers tied to the IRGC.

Coinbase files to bring single-stock perpetual futures to US marketCoinbase has filed with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to list single-stock perpetual futures in the United States, seeking to bring a derivatives product widely used in crypto markets to individual US equities.

The filing, submitted Friday through Coinbase Derivatives, seeks regulatory approval for contracts that would give US traders 24/5 exposure to individual stocks without owning the underlying shares. Perpetual futures differ from traditional futures contracts in that they do not expire.

Coinbase said the products would build on its existing US perpetual futures market, bringing the structure to individual stocks for US traders. The proposed contracts are classified by the CFTC as single-stock futures and remain pending regulatory approval.

The CFTC filing follows an earlier regulatory step by Coinbase Derivatives, which filed a Form 1-N with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Sept. 1 to register as a national securities exchange for the purpose of offering security futures.

Binance brushes off Lagarde MiCA speculation, reaffirms Europe commitmentBinance declined to address a report that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde intervened in its failed Greek crypto license bid and said it continues seeking authorization under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that a vice chair of Greece’s Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) told Binance that Lagarde had asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve its application.

Greek officials informed the European Securities and Markets Authority in early June that the regulator intended to approve the license, according to the report.

“We will not comment on speculation,” a Binance spokesperson told Cointelegraph. “In Europe, Binance remains committed to operating on a long-term, compliant basis under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation.”

US sanctions Iran’s BitBank, saying it processes “Hormuz Safe” Bitcoin paymentsUS authorities on Thursday announced sanctions against Iranian crypto exchange BitBank, accusing it of processing Bitcoin paid by ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said that as of June, the Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority used BitBank to transfer payments it received to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Treasury alleged it is part of the architecture used by Iranian financier Babak Zanjani to move hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin to the IRGC.

Treasury has previously alleged Hormuz Safe is part of an IRGC-backed scheme forcing vessels to buy maritime insurance for passage, including coverage against seizures by Iran itself.

“Today’s designations of Iranian digital asset infrastructure make perfectly clear that efforts to finance the Iranian regime using cryptocurrencies are not beyond OFAC’s reach,” said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
